What to do if stainless steel kitchenware is rusty

Date:2020-10-08 Hits:
Stainless steel building material is a metal that is not easy to rust, but it is not a metal that will never rust. Depending on the usage conditions or environment, it will also be contaminated and rusted. Don't think that stainless steel building materials don't rust, and neglect daily maintenance. When the pollution and rust become the most serious, you should panic to take cleaning measures. This kind of measure is the bottom line.
Stainless steel products have excellent corrosion resistance and are not easy to rust. As mentioned earlier, they contain chromium. In the air, it combines with oxygen to form a firm surface and form a dense non-oxidized film. This non-oxidized film can prevent oxidation (rust) on the surface of the steel, and can protect the surface to prevent corrosion by various corrosive factors . Therefore, if this kind of coating is damaged due to some corrosion reasons, and it is placed where chromium and oxygen cannot be combined, the stainless steel building materials will begin to rust.
However, as long as the cause of corrosion is eliminated and the chromium can be combined with oxygen, the non-oxidized film will be produced again and its corrosion resistance function will be restored.
There are many reasons for the contamination and rusting of stainless steel building materials. However, in general, they are caused by the adhesion, accumulation, and the adhesion of the salt contained in the sea breeze by the components in the floating iron powder or harmful gases in the atmosphere. These attachments will gradually accumulate and become fixed with moisture. This will destroy the non-oxidized film on the surface of stainless steel building materials and hinder the regeneration of this film, so the stainless steel building materials will begin to rust. This kind of rusty initial state can be restored to its original state by simply removing it. Even after long-term storage, as long as proper cleaning is done, it can restore a slightly different appearance than the original condition. It can be seen that the rust of stainless steel building materials is only the surface, not the corrosion of the material itself. This is fundamentally different from the rust of raw steel and aluminum.
Therefore, stainless steel building materials sometimes rust, but as long as maintenance is done frequently, the original beauty of stainless steel building materials can be maintained forever.

Causes of rust pollution
    1. When road construction, construction projects, or various vehicles are walking, they are attached to the scattered earth, sand, dust, iron powder, etc.
    2. When it is contaminated by harmful substances such as sulfurous acid gas contained in the exhaust of cars, buses, etc.
    3. It is polluted by the dust and harmful components in the exhaust from various industrial and mining waste incineration, building cooling and heating, etc.
    4. Polluted by corrosive gas generated in hot spring area.
    5. It is polluted by the salt in the coastal sea breeze.
    6. Contaminated by cleaning chemicals. Contaminated by hand marks and dirt.
    7. Contaminated by the mucosa for surface protection.

    Repair method
    1. When rusted due to adhesion of dissimilar metals
When the "incidental rust" caused by iron powder or the situation is not too serious, you can easily remove the rust by wiping with a sponge or cloth, plus a neutral detergent or soapy water. Then rinse with clean water, taking care not to leave the lotion on it. For this degree of rust removal, as long as the removal work is done immediately, it is not only easy to maintain, more effective, and the removal cost is also very cheap.
But if you ignore it in this way, a mixture of iron hydroxide, iron oxide, and iron sulfite will soon be formed, and it will show a dark brown severe rust state. In this case, it can be completely removed with commercially available stainless steel cleaning chemicals or diluted with 15℅ nitric acid. However, there are some rusts that can't be removed, and at the same time, it will damage the stainless steel surface or damage the stainless steel.
    2. Rust caused by harmful components in the attached exhaust
In the construction site zone, or in the environment with heavy traffic in the market, the appearance of stainless steel is easily contaminated, sometimes showing small spots of rust. Most of these conditions are caused by harmful components contained in exhaust from automobiles, air-conditioners, or factory exhaust. At this time, when the pollution is slight, it can be completely cleaned with a neutral detergent or soapy water, but when it is serious, it is not easy to handle. In this case, the same maintenance method as in item 1 can be used to clean it. In this environment, as far as possible 2-3 times a year, comprehensive regular cleaning work, at least once a year.
    3. Rust caused by attached salt
In coastal areas and other fronts that are hit by sea wind, SUS 304 stainless steel will also produce red rust in a short period of time.
Moreover, it rusts faster than other areas, and the treatment method is the same as in the case of 1.
When adopting stainless steel exteriors in coastal areas, it is hoped that more corrosion-resistant SUS 316 should be used as stainless steel.
As for the use of SUS 304 for stainless steel exterior, as much as possible, do regular cleaning 3-4 times a year.
    4. Rust caused by adhesion of cleaning chemicals
If it cannot be cleaned with a neutral cleaning agent, use a cleaning solution to remove it.
    5. Rust caused by hand dirt or fingerprints
If it cannot be cleaned with a neutral cleaning agent, wipe it with a sponge, cloth, etc. moistened with organic solvents (alcohol, benzine, acetone, etc.). If this method still cannot be completely removed, use a cleaning solution for stainless steel to remove it. All in all, after cleaning with various cleaning methods, you must do another rinse with clean water.
    6. Pollution caused by surface protective film
Use a sponge, cloth dipped in a water-soluble neutral detergent, or alcohol to wipe. If it is still ineffective, use diluent and light oil to remove it. Rinse thoroughly with clean water after washing.

Note on maintenance
    1. The reasons and conditions of pollution and rusting of stainless steel building materials are completely different for each situation, so the most suitable maintenance method should be adopted under various conditions.
    2. When using cleaning chemicals to remove pollution and rust, please do a local "test wipe" in advance to confirm the cleaning effect. If the test results are satisfactory, then follow this method to do a comprehensive cleaning. And don't only clean the contaminated and rusty parts, but also clean the surrounding parts as much as possible. If this is not done, the gloss of the stainless steel surface will be uneven and the appearance will be ugly.
    3. After using the cleaning liquid, it must be completely cleaned with clean water. Be careful not to leave the liquid on the stainless steel surface, otherwise it will cause rust. The cleaning liquid will cause rough or spotted hands, so please wear rubber gloves before use.
    4. When using cloth, loofah, nylon sponge, brush hooks, and brush cleaning appliances, they must be cleaned in parallel along the stainless steel grinding horizontal lines. If you do a round cleaning, the pollution is not easy to remove, and it will damage the glossy lines on the surface, making it ugly.
Steel cleaning tools, such as rough-line cleaning agents, or the use of sandpaper, can remove serious pollution, but it is absolutely prohibited to use them because they will damage the surface of stainless steel and attach iron powder to cause rust.
